AppLovin earnings show AI advertising is still in early innings

applovin earnings show ai advertising still in early innings

AppLovin (APP) shares surged on Thursday after the company delivered another quarter of “eye-catching” growth, but the real story extends far beyond a revenue or earnings beat.

Record results, stronger-than-expected guidance, and a fresh vote of confidence from RBC Capital suggest investors may be witnessing something more significant: the emergence of a scaled AI advertising platform that is still finding new avenues for growth.

AppLovin reported third-quarter revenue of $2.19 billion, up 55% year over year, while adjusted EBITDA climbed 59% to $1.84 billion. APP shares are still down some 40% year-to-date.

AppLovin stock is soaring on more than a strong quarter

On the surface, the numbers were impressive.

Revenue exceeded expectations, earnings topped consensus forecasts, and management guided fourth-quarter revenue to $2.37 billion to $2.40 billion, above Wall Street estimates.

The company also generated about $1.4 billion in free cash flow during the quarter and expanded its share repurchase authorization by $3.2 billion.

Yet investors appear focused on a deeper trend.

AppLovin’s next-generation advertising models are still only partially deployed, according to management.

That matters because the company’s recent growth has not come from simply adding more advertising inventory.

Instead, it has come from improving the efficiency with which advertisers spend money on its platform.

Better AI models can drive higher returns on ad budgets, which in turn encourages customers to spend more.

For AppLovin stock, that creates a potentially powerful flywheel where platform improvements fuel spending growth without requiring proportional increases in costs.

Street is turning more constructive on APP shares

The earnings report reinforced a narrative that some investors had begun questioning earlier this year: whether AppLovin’s extraordinary growth could continue at scale.

The latest results suggest the answer may still be yes.

The gaming business reaccelerated, consumer advertising spending continued to expand, and management’s guidance points to another quarter of more than 40% year-over-year growth.

Perhaps most importantly, profitability remains exceptional.

The company produced an adjusted EBITDA margin above 84%, a figure rarely seen among large-cap growth companies.

Following the report, RBC Capital raised its price target on APP stock to $520 while maintaining its Outperform rating.

The move signals that at least some analysts believe the latest results are not simply a one-quarter event but evidence of durable competitive advantages in the company’s advertising technology.

This bigger question investors should be asking

The key debate surrounding AppLovin shares is no longer whether the company is growing quickly.

The latest quarter largely settled that issue. Instead, investors must determine how long its AI-driven advantage can persist.

If management is correct that newer advertising models can unlock additional advertiser spending, today’s financial results may represent a midpoint rather than a peak.

The company generated record revenue, record profitability, and record free cash flow while still describing its latest technology rollout as incomplete.

That helps explain why the stock’s sharp rally was accompanied by renewed analyst optimism.

For bulls, the quarter was not merely proof that AppLovin had a strong three months.

It was evidence that the company’s AI advertising engine continues to gain strength, potentially extending one of the market’s most remarkable growth stories well into 2027.
